About ROCKHARBOR Watts PDF Print E-mail

ROCKHARBOR Watts is a group of volunteers dedicated to sacrificing our own agendas in order to serve the oft forgotten people of Watts. Our team consists of people who attend ROCKHARBOR Church in Costa Mesa, CA and many of us are more than accustom to the "Orange County Lifestyle". Some of us pay more per month for our car payment than entire families earn in a month in Watts! Despite these obvious contrasts, we regularly step out of our comfort zone in order to serve. Jesus set the example for us in the story told in John 13 where Jesus washed his disciples' feet. Jesus is the son of God and therefore has access to the ultimate powers of the universe, yet he lowered himself to the lowest position of his era. Now, 2000 years later, we voluntarily give up our human powers, wealth, prestige, political influence, etc., in order to be intimately involved in lives plagued with drug abuse, neglect, and murder. For some of us, this is an easy and exciting thing to do. Naturally, however, some of us are or have been terrified about all that Watts represents. To be truly affective in Watts, God calls us to not only sacrifice time and possessions but also our fears, prejudices, pride, agendas, and more. It is only after we have laid all of these things on the alter that we can truly serve others.

Although the Bible has plenty of things to say about the poor and needy, the following passages from Proverbs 22 say a lot about why we do what we do...

2 Rich and poor have this in common:
The LORD is the Maker of them all.

4 Humility and the fear of the LORD
bring wealth and honor and life.

6 Train a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not turn from it.

9 A generous man will himself be blessed,
for he shares his food with the poor.

13 The sluggard says, "There is a lion outside!"
or, "I will be murdered in the streets!"
