Watts Day Trip Details PDF Print E-mail

What

We go on monthly day trips to Powerhouse Church in Watts to help out with the Sunday services by leading or assisting Sunday school classes, providing transportation, praying, serving lunch, and other helpful tasks.

When and Where

We meet at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday morning in the front parking lot of 3080 Airway (across from 345 Fischer Ave). We carpool to and from Watts and typically arrive back at ROCKHARBOR at around 3:45 p.m.

What to Wear

Please wear blue jeans, a t-shirt and sneakers or similar attire. Avoid solid blue or red, and bandannas. There are gangs where we are going. Some of you may work in the kitchen. Others may vacuum. Be prepared to get a little dirty.

What to Bring

You don't need to bring anything other than your self and an open mind. Cell phones are allowed and are safe as long as you keep them close. However, please be respectful to those we are serving by avoiding phone calls as much as possible. You may bring a camera if you want. Bibles are provided. Please don't bring food unless you have been explicitly asked to do so. Lunch will be provided. Beverages like coffee and soda are okay.

Why We Are Going

Powerhouse Church resides in one of the countless impoverished neighborhoods in Watts. There are several government-built forts AKA homes right next store. The neighborhood is infested with drugs, alcohol, and gang violence. To the people we will be ministering to, we represent a beacon of hope. We are representatives of God, and He is the only one who can save them from their grief-stricken lives. We are going there to serve, to perform some tasks. However, our primary goal is to love. If you find that you have "nothing to do", that is an opportunity to pray or to talk to someone you don't know. These people desperately need love. Some of them wouldn't get any attention, let alone love, if it were not for servants like us. Don't be surprised to receive a hug or two from people, kids and adults alike.

What to Expect

Expect the unexpected. Expect chaos. Don't expect anything to start or end when it is supposed to. Don't expect anyone to remain in one place for very long. Don't expect to set down your wallet on a table and find it again 20 minutes later. Do expect surprises. Do expect God to do things that you couldn't have imagined if you had not experienced it yourself. Expect answers to prayers, especially the silly little ones. Do not expect to control anything. Expect that God has ultimate control and that He will act on your behalf when you ask Him to. Expect to pray a lot. Expect to be blessed.
